During pregnancy, if there are no contraindications to physical exertion, activations of abdominal muscles should be included in the training. There is more to tummy strengthening than classic ‘sit-ups’ or ‘crunches’!

Abdominal muscles perform many important functions in our body: they support internal organs, the spine and contribute to pressure inside the abdomen. During pregnancy, they must additionally maintain the weight of the uterus with the growing baby. And this is not an easy task as changes in the posture are happening.

The abdominal muscles must be flexible, strong and allow for any movement. Therefore, choose an exercise program dedicated to pregnant women ( I would highly recommend Pilates and yoga classes!)

Personally, I would not recommend exercises that involve a significant increase in intra-abdominal pressure and those with a heavy load. It is also worth visiting a women`s health physiotherapist before joining an exercise class.
