Vibrators and pelvic wands have their place in pelvic health physiotherapy treatment. Vibrations have a relaxing effect, and can improve the pelvic floor muscle relaxation phase and circulation.

What is overactive pelvic floor?

An overactive (or hypertonic) pelvic floor occurs when the muscles in the pelvic floor become too tight and are unable to relax. It affects women more than men. People with an overactive pelvic floor often experience:

  • Constipation
  • Incomplete Emptying Of The Bowel or/and Bladder
  • Straining When Emptying The Bowel
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Low Back Pain
  • Hip Pain
  • Coccyx Pain
  • Painful Sex
  • Bladder Urgency, Frequency and Incontinence
  • Recurrent infections (bladder and/or vaginal)

In such cases, in addition to individualised exercise program and recommendations, I also often recommend a vibrator.

What can vibrator be used for?

I often recommend mini vibrators or a vibrating pelvic wand (check it out here Vibrating Pelvic Wand – mnaphysiotherapy.com) as a part of treatment (especially if a person struggles with pain on insertion). It’s nice if it has several vibration modes. It can also be used as a part of birth preparation and when working with patients with persistent pelvic pain, e.g. vulvodynia or vaginismus.

How to use a vibrator?

You can use the vibrator either externally or internally. Start with a minute or two and gradually extend the time as tolerated . Try to use it daily or several times a week.
