How do you make your pelvic floor exercise routine fun? What keeps you motivated?
A lot of my patients find it hard to connect with their pelvic floor. Some find the pelvic floor treatment routine boring and some find it difficult to set up the habit of doing their program regularly.
Make a habit stick
Like all habits, repetition is key, so let`s talk about how we keep our pelvic floor exercise regimen daily to form a lifelong habit. One thing that can make a habit stick is by making it fun. One way of making pelvic floor exercises fun is to use gadgets! I’ve been recommending many gadgets over the years and find that for some people it makes a huge difference.
Gadgets in pelvic floor exercise treatment
Some of my favourites gadgets are:
- biofeedback machines like (they offer lots of fun workouts and motivate you by tracking your progress and keeping you keen to beat your previous score)
- vibrators (can be used to help treat pelvic pain conditions, relax your pelvic floor, prepare your pelvic floor for childbirth). You can purchase them here: https://mnaphysiotherapy.com/product/rocks-off-touch-of-velvet-bullet-vibrator/
- pelvic wands (great for self-massage and self-treatment, beneficial for women with pelvic pain, tight pelvic floor, can assist with perineal massage). I particularly like the ones by Intimate Rose. You can choose from a regular wand https://mnaphysiotherapy.com/product/pelvic-wand-pelvic-muscle-massager/ to a vibrating one https://mnaphysiotherapy.com/product/intimate-rose-pelvic-wand-with-vibration-for-pelvic-muscle-pain-relief/
These wands are designed by Dr Amanda Olson, who is also a pelvic health physical therapist. She has lots of videos on how to use them to help relief pelvic pain https://www.youtube.com/c/IntimateRose
- dilators (great for women who suffer with painful intercourse, women with overactive pelvic floor, they come in set of 3 or 5, so you can see the progression as you move from smaller to bigger size). I prefer the silicon ones as opposed to plastic https://mnaphysiotherapy.com/product/dilators-set-pink/. These dilators’ heart-shaped bases are a cute touch! https://mnaphysiotherapy.com/product/wellness-silicone-vaginal-dilator-kit-purple/
However, gadgets aren’t for everyone and that’s ok. I would recommend you see your pelvic health physio first and discuss using gadgets before starting your pelvic floor exercise journey.
